The Varna Graves Hold the World’s Oldest Worked Gold
A Copper Age cemetery near the Black Sea held thousands of gold objects.
In October 1972, an excavator operator named Raycho Marinov uncovered ancient burials while working in the western industrial zone of Varna, near Lake Varna in eastern Bulgaria. Local residents alerted Dimitar Zlatarski, the founder of the Dalgopol Historical Museum, who recognized the historical significance of the exposed material and alerted the Varna Historical Museum. Formal excavations soon commenced under the leadership of Mihail Lazarov and Ivan Ivanov, eventually revealing 294 graves belonging to the late Copper Age Varna culture. Radiocarbon dating by an Oxford-led team places the cemetery's use between roughly 4600 and 4350 BCE. To date, approximately thirty percent of the estimated burial ground remains unexcavated.
The cemetery included both crouched and extended inhumations alongside symbolic, skeleton-free burials termed cenotaphs. Across the site, archaeologists recovered around three thousand gold artifacts weighing a combined total of roughly six kilograms. While other regional finds such as those at Hotnitsa, Durankulak, Provadiya-Solnitsata, Sakar, and Yunatsite contain gold of comparable age, the Varna assemblage represents the largest and most varied early gold hoard known from antiquity. The quantity and weight of gold recovered here exceeds all documented gold artifacts from the fifth millennium BCE across the contemporary ancient world combined.
