Velázquez Paints a Court Looking Back at Itself

A royal portrait became a puzzle about who is watching whom.

In 1656, Diego Velázquez produced a large oil painting set within his working studio at the Royal Alcázar in Madrid. According to the painter and writer Antonio Palomino, the room shown is the Cuarto del Príncipe in the palace. Listed in the 1666 Alcázar inventory as a portrait of the empress with her ladies and a dwarf, the composition presents the five-year-old Infanta Margaret Theresa standing at the centre of an austere, high-ceilinged hall. Rather than arranging an official, static assembly, the court painter structured an ambiguous tableau that captures the young princess alongside her household, while depicting himself beside a towering canvas resting upon an easel.

The Infanta is attended by two maids of honour, known in Spanish as meninas. Doña María Agustina Sarmiento de Sotomayor kneels to present a drink in a small red vessel, while Doña Isabel de Velasco prepares to curtsy. To the right, the court dwarf Mari Bárbola and Nicolás Pertusato, who nudges a drowsy mastiff with his foot, stand at the front. Behind them linger a chaperone, Doña Marcela de Ulloa, and an unidentified male attendant. Further back, framed in a brightly illuminated open doorway on a staircase, stands Don José Nieto Velázquez, the queen's chamberlain. Suspended on the distant wall beside him is a mirror reflecting the pale half-length portraits of Philip IV and Queen Mariana, whose presence outside the immediate pictorial space reshapes the entire scene.
