The Grand Egyptian Museum Opens Beside the Pyramids

A vast museum brought Tutankhamun’s full collection together for the first time.

The Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza stands roughly two kilometres from the Giza Pyramid complex, and has been promoted as the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. Officially conceived in 1992 under the government of President Hosni Mubarak, the institution was planned to relieve overcrowding at the historic Egyptian Museum in Cairo and to consolidate treasures scattered across regional institutions and storehouses. The complex spans nearly 500,000 square metres, and the triangular pattern of its facade and its sloping interior ceilings echo the nearby pyramids.

Physical progress on the complex developed over several decades. An international design competition was launched in 2002, when the foundation stone was laid, and in 2003 the Dublin-based firm Heneghan Peng Architects won the design contract. Construction began in 2005, but political unrest after the 2011 Arab Spring halted work for three years, and the COVID-19 pandemic caused further interruptions to a project whose cost reached about 1 billion dollars. A soft opening in October 2024 gave visitors access to most of the main galleries, and an official opening date of 3 July 2025 was postponed because of regional tensions before the museum was fully inaugurated on 1 November 2025.
