The Swahili Town of Gede Flourishes on the Kenyan Coast
A stone town of mosques and houses traded across the Indian Ocean before it was abandoned.
Surrounded by the dense vegetation of the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest near the Kenyan coast, the stone ruins of Gedi represent one of the most extensively examined settlements of the medieval Swahili world. The town formed part of an expansive maritime network that connected coastal communities from southern Somalia down to Mozambique. Although early colonial observers tended to attribute these sophisticated urban centers solely to external Arab or Persian colonization, decades of subsequent archaeological investigations have established Gedi as an indigenous Swahili development with deep commercial, cultural, and political ties extending across the Indian Ocean basin and into the African interior.
Among the earliest dated evidence of occupation at the site is a grave marker radiocarbon dated to between 1041 and 1278, suggesting that settlement was under way by the eleventh or twelfth century; the National Museums of Kenya trace the town's origin to the twelfth century. In its initial phases, the community took shape in the northern section of the area, adopting Islam during the twelfth century. Excavations have traced a sequence of mosques that were built and rebuilt on the site over the following centuries.
