Simone Biles Wins Four Gold Medals in Rio
A 19-year-old American gymnast won four golds and a bronze at one Olympics.
On August 7, 2016, Simone Biles stepped onto the competition floor at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games to contest the women's gymnastics qualifications. The United States posted the highest team score in qualifying by more than nine points, and Biles went on to reach the individual all-around, vault, balance beam and floor exercise finals, setting the foundation for one of the most successful campaigns in modern Olympic gymnastics.
The team final on August 9 brought Biles her first Olympic gold medal. Performing as the only member of the American delegation to contest all four events, she posted an individual four-event tally of 61.833 points. The American squad, nicknamed the Final Five, compiled a winning total of 184.897, establishing an advantage of more than eight points over the silver-medal team from Russia. Two days later, Biles claimed the individual all-around Olympic title with a score of 62.198, finishing comfortably ahead of silver medalist Aly Raisman and Russian bronze medalist Aliya Mustafina.
