Michael Phelps Wins Eight Gold Medals in Beijing
A swimmer broke the record for golds at a single Olympic Games.
In August 2008, American swimmer Michael Phelps entered the Beijing Summer Olympics seeking to accomplish a feat never before achieved in modern Olympic history. Four years earlier, at the 2004 Games in Athens, he had captured six gold medals and two bronze medals. Yet the longstanding standard for the most first-place finishes at a single Olympics remained the seven gold medals collected by fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz at Munich in 1972. In Beijing, Phelps targeted eight events, aiming to surpass that mark.
Phelps had established the foundation for his Olympic campaign across more than a decade of structured preparation. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he began training at age eleven under coach Bob Bowman at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Bowman maintained a rigorous, regimented program that guided Phelps to his first Olympic appearance in 2000 at age fifteen. Over subsequent years, Phelps continued to train under Bowman, who coached at the University of Michigan from 2004 to 2008, and refined his versatility across butterfly, freestyle, and individual medley disciplines, steadily breaking long-course world records and capturing major international honors.
