Drones Begin Delivering Blood Across Rwanda

Parachuted packages cut delivery times to rural clinics from hours to minutes.

In October 2016, a commercial drone delivery network began operating from a centralized distribution hub in Muhanga, Rwanda. Built by the American company Zipline, the service emerged from an agreement with the Rwandan government to supply blood products and urgent medical items directly to remote health clinics. Rwanda's mountainous terrain and poorly developed roadways frequently delayed ground transport, creating severe logistical hurdles for clinics that required prompt access to life-saving treatments. Delivering these perishable supplies through the air presented an infrastructure model where aerial transport was comparable in cost to traditional roads, especially during medical emergencies.

The initial system depended on a fixed-wing autonomous aircraft known as Platform 1. Built from modular parts around a lightweight foam body, the aircraft could be assembled quickly for each flight. The craft carried two motors for redundancy alongside an emergency recovery parachute. Once launched, the drones flew fully autonomously along predetermined routes, guided by proprietary flight software.
