A Grain Silo in Cape Town Becomes an Art Museum
Old concrete tubes were carved into a vast atrium for contemporary art from Africa.
On September 22, 2017, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa officially opened in Cape Town, establishing the largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. Situated within the Silo District at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, a bustling commercial and tourist destination that draws tens of millions of visitors each year, the institution was formed through a partnership between the commercial Waterfront development and German businessman Jochen Zeitz. Under this arrangement, the Waterfront invested over five hundred million rand into construction and infrastructure, while Zeitz placed his extensive private collection on long-term loan to provide the core of the public non-profit museum.
The institution occupies a monumental fifty-seven-metre-tall grain silo complex originally constructed in the early 1920s. Decades after its industrial use concluded, the British firm Heatherwick Studio undertook the architectural challenge of transforming the complex into a functioning cultural venue. Rather than demolishing the dense network of forty-two cylindrical concrete tubes, the architects sought to honour the building's industrial character by carving vast hollow chambers directly out of the existing concrete core. Work on the site began in 2014 under the direction of Thomas Heatherwick, deploying heavy concrete-cutting techniques to hollow out galleries alongside a cavernous central atrium.
