The Zapotecs Build Monte Albán on a Leveled Mountain
A hilltop city became the capital of the Zapotec state.
Rising roughly 400 meters above the floor of the Valley of Oaxaca, Monte Albán was established around 500 BCE upon a high, easily defensible mountain ridge. Before this initial construction, the ridge appears to have been uninhabited, situated within a neutral buffer zone between competing chiefdoms. Settlement surveys in the valley revealed that the rapid rise of this new capital coincided with a sudden demographic decline at San José Mogote, the leading regional center of the northern Etla branch. Researchers interpret this population movement as an intentional relocation of communities, led by chiefly elites who chose to consolidate their authority at an elevated junction where three arms of the valley converged.
The physical heart of the city was created through extensive civic labor that artificially flattened the mountain ridge into a monumental Main Plaza. Large platform mounds rose at the northern and southern limits of the plaza, framing an open area large enough to gather thousands of residents for civic ceremonies and communal rites. A central spine of platform mounds occupied the middle of the terrace, while temples, ballcourts, and residences for elite families lined its edges. Beyond this monumental center, hundreds of artificial residential terraces were cut into the slopes of the mountain to accommodate the expanding population, which grew from founding settlers numbering at least 2,000 to many thousands within a few centuries.
