Li Ning Wins Three Golds in China’s Olympic Return

A gymnast’s performances became part of a wider story about a country re-entering the Summer Olympic stage.

At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, gymnast Li Ning represented the People's Republic of China in the country's return to the Summer Games after an absence dating to 1952. Born in Liuzhou, Guangxi, in 1963, Li was a gymnast of Zhuang ethnicity who had started formal training at eight years old. He earned a place on the Chinese national gymnastics team in 1980, entering international competition during a period when China was formally establishing its presence in the Olympic movement.

Li arrived in Los Angeles with substantial international recognition already established in earlier tournaments. At the Sixth World Cup Gymnastic Competition in 1982, he secured six of the seven available titles. This dominant performance led observers to refer to him as the Prince of Gymnastics. His success continued the following year at the 1983 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, where he helped the Chinese squad capture a gold medal in the team all-around competition.
