Prince Diponegoro Leads the Java War

A rebellion against Dutch rule spread across central Java.

In July 1825, open rebellion erupted across central Java when Prince Diponegoro took up arms against Dutch colonial authorities. The immediate trigger was a colonial road project ordered across his estate at Tegalreja, but discontent had gathered for decades. The 1755 Treaty of Giyanti, concluded with the Dutch East India Company, or VOC, had partitioned the historic Mataram realm into the princely states of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Following the dissolution of the VOC in 1799 and brief interludes of French and British control, reinstated Dutch officials increasingly asserted administrative authority over native aristocrats, while rural communities suffered under burdensome taxation, an epidemic, and volcanic disasters.

Diponegoro, the eldest son of Yogyakarta's Sultan Hamengkubuwono III, possessed deep ties to traditional religious circles and claimed visions urging him to lead a holy war. Resentful of Dutch interference in the court and alienated by colonial resident A. H. Smissaert, the prince withdrew from the regency governing the young Sultan Hamengkubuwono V. When colonial forces attempted to arrest him at his estate in late July 1825, Diponegoro retreated to the caves of Selarong and declared an uprising. Numerous Javanese nobles, religious scholars, and local villagers quickly joined his banner.
