Henri Christophe Crowns Himself King and Builds a Citadel
Haiti’s king built a mountaintop fortress to guard against a French return.
In March 1811, Henri Christophe converted the northern state of Haiti into a hereditary monarchy, taking the title King Henry I; he was crowned that June at Cap-Henry by Archbishop Corneille Brelle. Born in the Caribbean, probably on Grenada, Christophe had risen through the ranks of the revolutionary military during the slave uprising that began in 1791. He served as a general alongside Toussaint Louverture and later fought under Jean-Jacques Dessalines against French expeditionary troops attempting to reimpose slavery. Following the declaration of Haitian independence in 1804 and the subsequent assassination of Dessalines in 1806, regional and political rivalries fractured the country. Alexandre Pétion established an elected republic in the south, while Christophe retreated to the Plaine-du-Nord, consolidating power over a separate northern state that he ultimately transformed into a royal realm.
Central to Christophe's monarchical state was a vast network of architectural projects designed to project sovereignty and defend against foreign aggression. His most formidable engineering undertaking was the mountaintop fortress of Citadelle Laferrière, often called Citadel Henry, located near Milot. Originally conceived during Dessalines's rule and overseen in its early phases by Christophe, the massive citadel guarded the northern valleys against the constant threat of a French invasion. Complementing this fortress was the royal residence of Sans-Souci Palace at its base, along with the royal chapel of Milot, five other châteaux, and several additional palaces across his territory.
