Charlemagne Is Crowned Emperor in Rome

A Frankish king received an imperial crown from the pope.

On Christmas Day 800, Pope Leo III placed an imperial crown upon the head of Charlemagne in Rome. The Frankish king was the first ruler recognised as emperor in the West since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire roughly three centuries before. Charlemagne had spent decades expanding his realm, defending the papacy, and governing an extensive territory that encompassed most of Western and Central Europe. Though the exact motivations and mutual expectations surrounding the ceremony remain subjects of scholarly debate, the bestowal of the title elevated his status to an unprecedented height and forged an enduring link between Frankish monarchy and the Roman imperial heritage.

Charlemagne had risen from joint rule with his brother Carloman I upon the death of their father, Pepin the Short, in 768. Following Carloman's death three years later, Charlemagne became sole king and embarked on sustained territorial expansion. He dismantled the Lombard kingdom of northern Italy in 774 after answering an appeal from Pope Adrian I, annexed Bavaria, campaigned beyond the Pyrenees into northern Spain, and fought decades of protracted warfare against the Saxons. These conquests were accompanied by forced baptisms and violent reprisals, such as the beheading of thousands of Saxon captives recorded at the Massacre of Verden, systematically extending both Frankish dominion and Latin Christianity.
