László Bíró Patents a Ballpoint Pen

A journalist’s quick-drying pen was later made in Argentina and sold worldwide.

In the late nineteenth century, inventors sought writing instruments capable of marking surfaces where delicate fountain pens failed. American inventor John J. Loud obtained a patent in 1888 for a design using a small rotating steel ball held within a socket, intended to mark coarse wrapping paper and wood. Loud's device proved far too rough for everyday correspondence, and its patent lapsed without commercial exploitation. Over the subsequent decades, numerous international attempts to produce functional ballpoint instruments foundered because manufacturing tolerances could not reconcile ink viscosity with mechanical clearance. If a socket fitted too tightly, ink failed to flow; if fitted too loosely, the reservoir leaked and smeared.

The modern ballpoint pen emerged from the practical frustrations of Hungarian newspaper editor László Bíró. Irritated by time spent refilling fountain pens and cleaning smudged sheets, Bíró observed that viscous inks used in newspaper printing dried rapidly and left paper clean. He resolved to adapt that chemistry to a portable writing implement. Working alongside his brother György, a dentist possessing knowledge of chemistry, Bíró formulated thick, oil-based inks. They combined these pastes with a precision ball-and-socket mechanism that permitted controlled delivery during writing while shielding the reservoir from the open air. Bíró filed for a British patent covering this innovation on 15 June 1938.
