One Hundred Years of Solitude Is Published
Gabriel García Márquez’s novel became a landmark of Latin American literature.
In early June 1967, after printing was completed on 30 May, the Argentine publishing house Editorial Sudamericana released Gabriel García Márquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude in Buenos Aires. Conceived two years earlier during a family drive from Mexico City to Acapulco, the narrative occupied the Colombian author for eighteen months of intense writing. Drawing on his youth in Aracataca, García Márquez synthesized the political memories of his grandfather, a veteran of Colombia's Thousand Days' War, with the folklore and supernatural sensibilities of his grandmother. The resulting chronicle of the fictional town of Macondo and the multi-generational Buendía family became an immediate success, with the first printing of 8,000 copies selling out within weeks.
The novel recounts seven generations of the Buendía lineage, beginning with the utopian founding of Macondo by José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán. Isolated from the wider world except for itinerant bands of travelers, the settlement gradually encounters outside forces, national politics, and economic expansion. Its trajectory charts cycles of modernization, ideological warfare, and familial repetition, including the repeated trauma of civil conflict led by Colonel Aureliano Buendía. Over time, the introduction of the railway and foreign fruit enterprises exposes the community to commercial exploitation, culminating in labor unrest, violent suppression, and ultimate decay.
