Édith Piaf Introduces La Vie en rose
A postwar song became the signature of French chanson.
In 1945, in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the French singer Édith Piaf drafted the lyrics to a new ballad that would eventually redefine her career. The composition, titled La Vie en rose, captured a spirit of romantic renewal following years of wartime deprivation and occupation. Despite its subsequent fame, the piece was initially met with hesitation by those in Piaf's professional circle. Her regular composer Marguerite Monnot declined to set the words to music, dismissing the material as trivial, while other collaborators considered it distinctly inferior to the rest of her repertoire.
Piaf temporarily shelved the draft before deciding to revive it the following year. The musical arrangement was formally credited to the composer Louiguy, although contemporary accounts suggest that the pianist Robert Chauvigny played a significant role in finishing the score. Piaf first offered the song to her friend, the singer Marianne Michel, who asked for a minor but pivotal alteration to the text, changing the phrase les choses to la vie and creating the definitive phrase that lent the song its evocative name. Michel was the first to perform it in Parisian cabarets, and only after it caught on there did Piaf reclaim it for herself.
