The Paraguayan War Devastates a Nation
A war against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay killed a large share of Paraguay’s people.
In late 1864, escalating tensions in South America exploded into the Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance. The roots of the clash lay in long-standing boundary controversies inherited from colonial partitions, alongside acute rivalry over the strategic waterways of the Rio de la Plata basin. As the newly independent states formed following the dissolution of Spanish and Portuguese authority, ambiguous borders around rivers such as the Apa and Branco sparked persistent friction. At the same time, regional powers competed for influence over smaller neighboring republics.
The immediate crisis emerged from civil unrest in Uruguay, where Brazilian troops intervened in late 1864 against the Blanco government, an ally of Paraguay, which fell in February 1865. Paraguayan president Francisco Solano Lopez viewed the shift as a perilous alteration of the regional balance. In November 1864, Paraguayan forces captured the Brazilian vessel Marques de Olinda on the Paraguay River, subsequently launching an invasion into the Brazilian province of Mato Grosso. Seeking to reinforce allies further south, Lopez requested passage through Argentine territory. When President Bartolome Mitre denied the request, Paraguayan units entered Corrientes, prompting Argentina and Uruguay to form the Triple Alliance alongside Brazil in May 1865.
