The Orange Revolution Overturns a Disputed Election
Protests in Kyiv led to a rerun of Ukraine’s presidential runoff.
In late November 2004, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators converged on Kyiv after Ukraine held a contested presidential election. The official runoff pitted Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, backed by outgoing president Leonid Kuchma and the Russian government, against opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko. The campaign had already unfolded under severe tension, including the mysterious dioxin poisoning of Yushchenko earlier that autumn. Following the runoff on November 21, the Central Election Commission declared Yanukovych the victor by roughly three percentage points. However, independent exit polls and reports from domestic and international observers indicated that Yushchenko held a substantial lead, triggering allegations of widespread ballot rigging and government manipulation.
Protests erupted immediately across the capital and multiple regional centers. Demonstrators turned Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Kyiv's central Independence Square, into an encampment of civil resistance. Participants adopted orange banners and clothing, reflecting the signature color of Yushchenko's Our Ukraine campaign coalition. Opposition groups coordinated sit-ins, strikes, and daily marches, which grew to an estimated several hundred thousand to one million people during peak days in freezing conditions. Civic activist networks such as Pora organized logistics and maintained peaceful discipline among the crowds.
