Argentina Wins a World Cup Final Decided on Penalties

Lionel Messi lifted the trophy after one of the most dramatic finals ever played.

On 18 December 2022, Argentina met France in the men's FIFA World Cup final at Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar. Before an official attendance of 88,966 spectators, the match brought together France, the reigning champions, and an Argentina side attempting to secure their third global crown.

Argentina established dominance during the opening half of the match. In the 23rd minute, captain Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot after French forward Ousmane Dembele tripped Angel Di Maria inside the area. Argentina doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Di Maria finished a sweeping counter-attack, sliding the ball home after Alexis Mac Allister played it across the field to him. France had barely threatened, and in the 41st minute French manager Didier Deschamps replaced Olivier Giroud and Dembele with Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani.
