The Great Kantō Earthquake Strikes Tokyo
An earthquake and fires devastated Tokyo and Yokohama.
Just before noon on 1 September 1923, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.9 struck beneath the Sagami Trough southwest of Tokyo, shattering the Kantō region of Japan. The catastrophic sequence began with a dual rupture along a broad trench-type fault near Sagami Bay, followed within minutes by two severe aftershocks exceeding magnitude 7.0 beneath northern Tokyo Bay and Yamanashi Prefecture. Because the initial tremors coincided with the preparation of midday meals, overturned charcoal braziers and severed gas mains instantly ignited more than a hundred separate blazes across Tokyo. Fanned by high winds from a passing offshore typhoon, these blazes coalesced into uncontrollable urban firestorms that swept across densely built wooden districts.
The disaster wrought extraordinary physical destruction across the Kantō Plain, transforming much of Tokyo and nearly the entirety of Yokohama into ruined ground. Modern estimates by Japan's Cabinet Office place the number of dead and missing at 105,385, with fires responsible for roughly nine in ten of those deaths. In eastern Tokyo, open grounds proved perilous; about 38,000 people who had sought refuge there died when an immense whirlwind of fire engulfed the Honjo Clothing Depot site. Across seven affected prefectures, the catastrophe displaced roughly 2.5 million residents, wrecking water systems, telegraph lines, rail networks, and more than 400 bridges throughout the capital.
