Heartbreak Hotel Becomes Elvis Presley’s First Big Hit
A single made a young singer a national sensation.
In November 1955, songwriter Mae Boren Axton played a demonstration tape in a Nashville hotel room for Elvis Presley, a twenty-year-old singer preparing to move from independent Sun Records to RCA Victor. The composition, titled Heartbreak Hotel, was written earlier that year by Axton and Tommy Durden, though their accounts differed regarding its exact origins. Durden claimed he had completed the piece and played it with his band before sharing it with Axton, whereas Axton stated that Durden brought her an unfinished idea based on a report of a man jumping to his death from a hotel window, leaving a note about walking a lonely street. Presley responded enthusiastically, memorizing the song on the spot and receiving a co-writing credit as part of his agreement to record it.
Presley entered RCA Victor's Nashville studio on January 10, 1956, to record the track during his first sessions for the label. He brought Heartbreak Hotel without obtaining prior approval from company executives. The recording presented immediate technical hurdles for producer Steve Sholes, who was accustomed to performers remaining stationary before microphones. Presley insisted on moving as he sang, prompting Sholes to re-rig microphones across the studio to track his vocals and acoustic guitar. Presley was joined by his regular bandmates, guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, and drummer D.J. Fontana, alongside RCA session players Chet Atkins and pianist Floyd Cramer.
