Inca Garcilaso Publishes His Royal Commentaries
A mestizo writer told the history of the Incas from his mother’s side.
In 1609, the printshop of Pedro Crasbeeck in Lisbon issued the first edition of the Comentarios Reales de los Incas, composed by Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. The author, born in colonial Peru during the violent decades following the initial Spanish arrival, was the natural son of the Spanish captain Sebastian Garcilaso de la Vega y Vargas and the Inca princess Isabel Suarez Chimpu Ocllo. Raised among his mother's relatives until the age of ten and later living with his father, Garcilaso occupied a unique position between two distinct societies. When he departed for Spain at about the age of twenty, where he remained for the rest of his life, he carried memories, family stories, and native oral traditions that later shaped his major historical work.
Prior to the release of his chronicle on the Andes, Garcilaso had already established his literary reputation in Europe. He had translated the Dialogos de Amor into Spanish and authored La Florida del Inca, a well-received narrative recounting the expedition of Hernando de Soto. The Comentarios Reales, however, stood as a direct effort to chronicle the customs, governance, and civilization of the Inca Empire from the perspective of an author who claimed royal descent through his maternal lineage. It offered European readers an extensive description of Andean statecraft, religious practices, and social structures.
