Surgeons in Amiens Perform the First Partial Face Transplant

A woman disfigured by a dog bite received a donor’s nose, lips and chin.

On 27 November 2005, a medical team in France achieved a historic milestone by completing the world's first successful partial face transplant on a living human. The operation took place at the Amiens-Picardie University Hospital and was conducted by oral and maxillofacial surgeon Bernard Devauchelle, Belgian plastic surgeon Benoit Lengelé, and transplant specialist Jean-Michel Dubernard. Their patient was thirty-eight-year-old Isabelle Dinoire, who had sustained severe facial disfigurement earlier that year after a traumatic dog bite. During the fifteen-hour procedure, the surgeons grafted a triangular section of tissue comprising the nose, lips, and chin from a deceased donor onto Dinoire's face, meticulously reconnecting delicate nerves and blood vessels to restore both structure and circulation.

The concept of transferring facial tissue from one person to another had stirred intense professional controversy well before the Amiens team entered the operating room. Surgeons had previously managed replantation procedures, reconnecting a patient's own severed features after violent accidents, such as the full-face replants achieved in India in 1994 and Australia in 1996. However, borrowing allograft tissue from a deceased donor represented a major conceptual leap. British surgeon Peter Butler had sparked widespread debate in 2002 by proposing the technique in The Lancet for patients with catastrophic facial burns and trauma. While conventional reconstruction relied on harvesting a patient's own skin from areas like the thighs or back, it frequently left severe scarring and compromised facial motion.
