Explorers Find the Painted Chauvet Cave

Cave paintings of lions, horses and rhinoceroses turned out to be among the oldest known.

On December 18, 1994, speleologists Eliette Brunel-Deschamps, Christian Hillaire, and Jean-Marie Chauvet explored an opening on a limestone cliff above the former bed of the Ardeche River in southeastern France. Months earlier, caver Michel Rosa had noticed an aperture at the site, nicknamed Baba's Hole. Penetrating deeper into the underground chambers, the team came upon vast caverns decorated with ancient animal imagery, alongside fossil bones and preserved animal tracks. A subsequent survey, joined by Michel Chabaud, revealed deeper galleries, including the End Chamber and the Gallery of the Lions.

The interior preserved clear traces of prehistoric ecology and human activity. The soft clay floor retained the sleeping hollows and paw prints of cave bears, together with their fossilized skulls and the remains of an ibex. Other tracks suggested the presence of canids, though specialists debate whether the imprints belonged to early dogs or wolves. Human presence was marked by ancient hearth remains, torch smoke residue along the walls, and human footprints, including those of a child. A prehistoric cliff collapse had sealed the natural entrance, preserving these delicate traces undisturbed for millennia.
