An Earthquake Destroys Spitak in Soviet Armenia

A quake killed tens of thousands and drew foreign aid into the Soviet Union.

On the morning of 7 December 1988, a devastating earthquake struck the northern region of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. Originating at a shallow depth on a thrust fault near the town of Spitak, the initial tremor registered a surface-wave magnitude of 6.8. The main shock was followed minutes later by a strong aftershock. The seismic shock wave radiated through densely populated industrial centers and rural mountain valleys, reaching a maximum intensity of ten on the twelve-degree Medvedev-Sponheuer-Karnik scale.

The physical destruction was catastrophic, particularly in Spitak, Leninakan, and Kirovakan. Estimates of the death toll range from about 25,000 to 50,000 or more, and up to 130,000 people were injured. While vital transport corridors like bridges and tunnels mostly remained standing, public healthcare infrastructure failed completely. Hospitals around Spitak were destroyed, killing much of the local medical staff and wiping out crucial stores of pharmaceuticals and equipment just as tens of thousands of severely injured citizens required emergency attention.
