Leicester City Wins the Premier League Against Huge Odds
A club given odds of 5,000 to 1 won England’s top division.
Leicester City entered the 2015–16 season with minimal expectations from outside observers. The club had narrowly avoided relegation the previous spring, with 13 clubs finishing above them, and bookmakers priced them as 5,000 to 1 outsiders to win the championship.
The campaign, Claudio Ranieri's first as manager, began with a 4–2 victory over Sunderland built on early goals from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. Across the opening months, the squad repeatedly recovered from losing positions. In September, Leicester scored three times in the last 18 minutes to beat Aston Villa 3–2 after trailing by two goals, and a week later came back from two goals down to draw 2–2 at Stoke City. Although Arsenal ended a six-match unbeaten run with a 5–2 win at the King Power Stadium, Leicester climbed to third in October, supported by an unbroken scoring run from Vardy.
