An Earthquake Shatters Central Christchurch

A shallow quake killed 185 people and brought down much of the city’s historic centre.

At 12:51 p.m. on 22 February 2011, a violent magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck New Zealand's Canterbury region. Centred just 6.7 kilometres south-east of downtown Christchurch at a shallow depth of roughly five kilometres, the rupture released exceptional seismic energy directly beneath urban neighbourhoods. The shaking lasted only around ten seconds, but because the hypocentre was so shallow and positioned so close to populated areas, the ground movement proved catastrophic. Instruments registered some of the highest peak ground accelerations ever documented in the world, with vertical acceleration substantially outpacing horizontal forces and throwing people into the air.

Scientists classified the event as an intraplate earthquake occurring along a previously unidentified blind fault. GNS Science evaluated the tremor as part of the ongoing aftershock sequence tied to the magnitude 7.1 Canterbury earthquake of September 2010. However, some external seismologists, such as those from Geoscience Australia, viewed it as a distinct event given its separate fault mechanism. Ground motion in Christchurch exceeded design standards intended for structures built to survive once-in-a-millennium events, generating forces far greater than the estimated ground acceleration recorded during the catastrophic 2010 Haiti earthquake.
