Cathy Freeman Wins the Sydney Olympic 400 Metres

An Olympic race carried sporting achievement and questions of national identity into the same moment.

Catherine Astrid Salome Freeman stepped onto the running track at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games under intense national scrutiny. Born in Queensland with Kuku Yalanji and Birri Gubba heritage, she had already established herself as one of the world's premier sprinters. Earlier during the opening ceremonies of the same Games, organisers selected her to light the Olympic flame, placing her visibly at the forefront of the host country's international showcase.

Freeman entered the competition with a formidable record in the 400 metres. At the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, she had earned a gold medal in the 4 by 100 metres relay at age sixteen, becoming the first Aboriginal athlete to win gold at those games. Her breakthrough season followed in 1994, when she secured individual Commonwealth titles in both the 200 metres and 400 metres, dramatically lowering her personal bests. By the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, she had pushed French champion Marie-Jose Perec to the wire, claiming the silver medal with an Australian record of 48.63 seconds.
