Hassiba Boulmerka Wins Algeria’s First Olympic Gold

A middle-distance runner reached the top of her sport while confronting pressure over women’s place in public life.

On 8 August 1992, at the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Hassiba Boulmerka won the final of the women's 1,500 metres. Born in Constantine in northeastern Algeria, she had started running seriously when she was ten years old, focusing on the 800 and 1,500 metres events. Early on, she won medals at regional, national and international levels, and in 1988 she took African titles at both 800 and 1,500 metres. Her arrival on the global stage was initially challenging. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, she suffered early elimination during the preliminary heats of both the 800 metres and the 1,500 metres.

Boulmerka continued training, and her performances steadily developed over the next three years. Her international emergence came in 1991, when she won both the 800 and 1,500 metres at the Mediterranean Games in Athens and then entered the World Championships in Tokyo. In the final of the 1,500 metres, she produced a decisive sprint along the home straight to claim first place. That victory made her the first African woman to secure an athletics world championship title, establishing her among the sport's elite middle-distance runners.
